Graduates - Here is Your Call to Action!

LPInc. CLASS RECRUITMENT 2007:

Calling All "Connectors, Mavens and Salespersons..."

Essentially, the network of relationships woven together by our graduates and participants is at the heart of how we recruit individuals for each year's class of  Leadership Pittsburgh and Leadership Development Initiative.   In Malcom Gladwell's book, The Tipping Point, he describes "Connectors, Mavens and Salesmen" as the three types of people that have the power to cause “social epidemics,” that is: a relatively small change in the behavior of only a few people induces similar behavioral change in others.

By recruiting new class members to apply to LPInc., YOU can exert the same power of change: YOU can provide opportunities to effect and enhance another's career, and at the same time, help ensure the vitality of Leadership Pittsburgh, Inc. and our region.  If YOU are ready to create an epidemic of civic engagement and leadership in our region, please take a moment to encourage a friend, colleague, employee, or coworker to apply for the LPINC. 2007-08 classes.  LDI grads are also encouraged to apply for LP classes.

Please refer interested candidates to attend an open-house session. We ask that all attendees register online via our website: www.lpinc.org.

Cup-A-Joe is a Well Spring of Humanity

The Christian East African and Equatorial Development Trust  (CEED) is a Wexford-based nonprofit founded in 1999 and committed to using its profits to fund humanitarian endeavors, and is chaired by Worth Helms, LP II. CEED is serving up fresh-roasted coffee beans while serving the basic needs of an African village. Ugandan Gold Premium Coffee is hand-picked and sun-dried on a coffee farm in Wambabya, Uganda, and imported to the United States to be roasted and sold. Last year, its coffee business turned a modest profit for the first time, and this year it will drill 11 water wells in an area of Uganda where women and children often walk five miles to fill gallon jugs with muddy water.  For the full story, please click to the Pittsburgh Business Times article here. And congratualtions to Worth and the entire organization for their outstanding social enterprise work - being conducted by folks right here in Pittsburgh!

Hope Floats

Karl Thomas, LDI V, was shrouded in a Gulf of Mississippi fog on Friday morning, March 9th. But he remained upbeat about the impact his organization's pet project can have on environmental education in Pittsburgh. As the executive director of the North Side-based RiverQuest, Karl was recently describing to numerous newspapers how one of the world's first "green" passenger boats is on it's way to Pittsburgh to serve the community via RiverQuest. RiverQuest has created Explorer, one of the first green passenger boats in the world to serve as its flagship vessel for river-based science education and public programming. The 150-passenger, 90’x25’ boat will host over 10,000 students a year while reducing emissions to air and water, implementing innovative propulsion technology and alternative fuels. It will also serve as a practical model for sustainable boating technology worldwide. Happy boating, Karl!

Perfect Job is More Than a "Wing and a Prayer"

Linda Dickerson, LP IV, and past chair of the LPI Board of Directors, has long been known in the region as a champion of non-profit organizations, and principal of her consulting firm 501(c)32. Now, Linda has recently named Chief Executive Officer of The National Aviary on Pittsburgh's North Side.  Linda, who has been an aviary trustee since 2003, succeeds Dayton Baker.  According to Linda, "While I love animals, this is really not the reason I accepted the job... it is my fervent belief that this facility will contribute to this region's bottom line."  Her job in this new role will be to grow conservation and research programs, expand interactive family recreational programming and prepare for the construction of a new theater. Plus, she admits, she is "one of the rare few who [have] secured the perfect job."  Congratulations, Linda!
