LDI XVI Welcome Reception The class will embark on an overnight retreat at Camp Kon-O-Kwee on the evening following the reception. October 3rd and 4th will be a weekend of low-ropes and leadership learning experiences for our latest group of emerging leaders. LP XXV Retreat
![]() LEFT: Bille Pearce Rondinelli, Tom Blanchard, Shawn Brooks RIGHT: Ian Prisuta, Stephen Catanzarite, Toni Felice A Story, a Challenge, a Promise . . . And
Leadership --LP XXIV and the Future of Our Children Not content with meeting that challenge, LP XXIV decided to meet it with another! Members of the class utilized the grant as challenge money to motivate and inspire their classmates to raise money to support the efforts of The Pittsburgh Promise, a community commitment to both help students and families of the Pittsburgh Public Schools plan, prepare, and pay for education beyond high school and enhance the growth, stability and economic development of the Pittsburgh region. The Pittsburgh Promise program was launched in December 2007 with a $100 million commitment from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), which included an initial $10 million to implement the scholarship program in time to support the 2008 graduates of the school district. The remaining $90 million is a challenge grant, intended to spur a community-wide campaign to raise an additional $135 million ($15 million per year over the next nine years). As national research indicates, the prosperity of a region is dependent on the prosperity of the city at its core. Like many urban centers, Pittsburgh is facing a decline in its city school population, residents and businesses. A healthy, well-performing school system is vital to the success of a city, contributing economic and social stability, discouraging population loss, helping to inspire urban growth, attracting families back to the urban core and producing the qualified workers that local businesses need in order to prosper. The Pittsburgh Promise supports both Pittsburgh Public Schools and the vision of a healthy, vibrant, city core for our region. $1000.00 in hand, LP XXIV took to the internet and in three short weeks and largely through the power of a grassroots, email campaign amongst their class, LP XXIV turned that $1,000.00 into nearly $9,000.00! (They certainly have a better rate of investment return than the stock market!). The class experiences throughout their LP curriculum informed their decision to support The Pittsburgh Promise and influenced this act of truly exemplary leadership. Not content with challenging only each other, LP XXIV has decided that they want to spearhead efforts to challenge OTHER LPI classes to meet or exceed their contribution to The Pittsburgh Promise. LP XXIV has committed $500.00 of the funds they raised as a challenge grant for another LP class! Within the next month, LP XXIV will be issuing a formal challenge to an additional LP class (watch your email boxes!) to help make the vision of The Pittsburgh Promise a reality. LP XXIV hopes to start a movement that finds all LP classes challenging each other to support our kids (as The Pittsburgh Promise refers to the students it serves in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.) LPInc. applauds LP XXIVs vision, efforts and their willingness to strengthen our region in a truly meaningful way!
