EMPLOYMENT & community opportunities Submitted by: David Mosey, LP XIX, Smart Futures Mentors Needed for Smart Futures ![]() Smart Futures has recently unveiled an online college and career mentoring program called PA eMentoring and WE NEED MENTORS!!! If you agree to help out, you will be matched with a student from one of a wide variety of schools in the Pittsburgh Region, from Pittsburgh Public Schools to Quaker Valley to Parkway West. The program will guide you through a series of 10 career education modules that will be used as the basis for your conversations with your mentee. You will then exchange at least one email a week for ten weeks, sharing lessons that you have learned throughout your college and career journey. The time commitment is minimal and it's convenient because everything is done from right in front of your computer through our website (personal contact information is never shared). The only requirement is that you have Act 33/34 clearances to participate, and we'll guide you through the process of getting those. At the end of the program, your mentee will have created a personalized College and Career Plan that will become a part of their high school portfolio. You, in turn, will have created a very engaging College and Career Journal that you can share with your own children and other mentees you may decide to take on in the future. Learn about the program at: www.pa-ementor.org. Sign up at: www.pa-ementor.org/signup.shtml.

Senator John Heinz History Center - 1212 Smallman Street, Pittsburgh Submitted by: Carey Harris, LDI IV, A+ Schools: Pittsburgh's Community Alliance for Public Education Volunteer Recruitment–Board Watch A+
Schools and Leadership Pittsburgh believe that the City and the region rely on an excellent public school system in order to prosper. But the school system will only be as good as its leadership demands. Board Watch is an effort to engage and inform the community about school board governance in order to insure that improved student achievement is the number one priority for the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Board Watch is a grassroots effort established by A+ Schools involving volunteers who are trained to observe Pittsburgh Public School Board meetings. All Board Watch volunteers participate in a training session that includes an overview of the state policies that created school boards, the structure and function of our local board and gain knowledge of how to recognize good governance in action. Board Watch volunteers are then asked to observe one school board meeting per month for at least six months A+ Schools welcomes all concerned citizens who are residents of the City of Pittsburgh and share our commitment to student achievement and our expectations for effective School Board governance. If you are interested in learning more about Board Watch and/or in becoming a volunteer please contact A+ Schools (412)258-2660, info@aplusschools.org, or www.aplusschools.org
