About TEDx LeadershipPittsburgh

Leadership Pittsburgh wishes to thank the Grable Foundation for their encouragement, trust and leadership funding that made the TEDx LeadershipPittsburgh event possible.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It was conceived in 1984 by Philadelphia-based architect Richard Wurman as a conference to bring together people from those three worlds to share ideas and collaborate on future possibilities. With an underlying passion and belief in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and the world, TED has grown into a series of events and has been branded by attendees as "the ultimate brain spa," "a think tank for humanity" and "a journey into the future."

In 2001, TED was sold to the private non-profit Sapling Foundation which is headed by Chris Anderson and focuses on providing a platform for the world’s best thinkers, greatest visionaries and most-inspiring teachers so that millions of people can gain a better understanding of issues and combine their talents and resources to create a better future. The heart of TED is the annual four-day conference which, since its inception, had been held in Monterey, California. In 2009 TED made an aggressive move to expand the sharing of ideas by ensuring independently organized TEDx events throughout the world.

TEDx indicates not only an independently organized TED event, but also the multiplication of the TED experience. TEDx events are local or regional, self-organized gatherings that use the TED concept and format. They may involve 10 people or several hundred and may last as short as an hour or expand to a full day — but they all share the purpose to expand the TED concept and expose receptive minds to new ideas that spark new connections that lead to a better future. As of November 15, 2009 there were more than 130 TEDx events scheduled throughout the world in 2009 and 2010, but TEDx LeadershipPittsburgh is the only multi-day TEDx event in the world and the only one focused specifically on the future of children.
